Basel is located in northwestern Switzerland at the intersection of the French, German, and Swiss borders, making it a key European hub. Currently, the City of Basel is experiencing significant population growth and demographic transformation, which in turn demands the rapid expansion and maintenance of urban infrastructure, particularly in the areas of mobility and housing. Additionally, as industrial production evolves, many industrial sites are becoming vacant and therefore require thoughtful sustainable transformation and integration into the urban fabric. In response, Basel has launched the Urban Vision Basel 2050, aiming for sustainable densification and participatory planning on a city and district level. Furthermore, projects like the Klybeckareal illustrate how former industrial sites can be transformed into vibrant, mixed-use districts that foster community and cultural life. On a building level, the kHaus shows that converting a former barracks into a cultural center can help promote cultural diversity, interaction, and encounters throughout an entire neighborhood or city.
