The transformations of 9’000m2 military barracks in cultural, social, and creative industries centere – kHaus.
I. Genesis
Originally designed between 1860 and 1863 by the renowned Basel architect Johann Jakob Stehlin-Burckhardt at the site of the Klingental Abbey. In 1966, when the military moved out, Stadt Basel became the new owner. There have been debates and arguments about what to do with the main building of the Kaserne, an architectural landmark in the heart of Basel.
From the 1960s it became the first place in the city where free culture and civil society initiatives developed.
In 1972, the local council sought proposals for a site utilization concept, leading to the approval of the “ent-stop-lo” project – a cultural and neighbourhood centre promoting social and cultural activities.
By 1980, the “Kulturwerkstatt Kaserne” association was officially established. It oversees artistic administration with subsidies from Canton Basel-Stadt.
From 1980, the area was used by various actors from culture, sports, gastronomy, religion, etc. It has become a well-known cultural and important living center in Basel. The main building did not play a significant role and was mainly used by schools.
In 2000, Kaserne Basel underwent extensive renovation, producing the acclaimed play “Happy Days” and receiving increased annual subsidies. Operational restructuring laid the foundation for an economically viable business plan, contributing to its growth as an international music and event destination with about 270 events and 60,000 guests annually.
In 2014, Kaserne Basel played a key role in organizing the Swiss Contemporary Dance Days, gathering specialists from 35 countries. Collaboration with the EU project “2nd Cities – Performing Cities” began.
In 2017, building work prompted Kaserne Basel to tour various venues and launch a citywide poster campaign.
Among the scenarios for the future of Kaserne was to deconstruct it or to leave it to uncontrolled gentrification and displacement.

This could result in an environment where residents and visitors alike feel less secure.

- Environmental issues in the area are addressed through sustainable urban planning and development. Eco-friendly practices and green infrastructure are integrated to mitigate the environmental impact of Kasernen Hause.
- Recognizing the security concerns stemming from the red-light district and deprived immigrant communities, security measures and community policing have been introduced to create a safer environment for residents and visitors.

- Critical infrastructure issues, including transportation and utility services, are being addressed to improve accessibility and reliability, enhancing the overall living and working environment in the area.
- The preservation of historical and culturally significant buildings, like Kasernen Hause, is a priority. The renovation of such structures is done in a manner that maintains the area’s cultural heritage.
