Sarajevo

Sarajevo, located in central Bosnia and Herzegovina, is characterized by a complex urban morphology shaped by Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian, and socialist influences. The city’s historical layering and rapid post-war at the end of the 20th century reconstruction have resulted in spatial fragmentation and infrastructural challenges, particularly in the context of climate vulnerability and informal urban growth. To address these challenges on a city scale, Sarajevo has developed a Climate Strategy under the EU Cities Mission, which integrates participatory governance and data-driven planning to achieve climate neutrality. On a district scale the revitalization of the Breka settlement demonstrates how small, environmentally friendly measures can achieve participatory urban renewal, while the sensory park in Novo Sarajevo on a small scale is an example of inclusive, sustainable design for children, that is consistent with the city’s broader sustainability vision.
